Alright, picture this: you wake up, run your fingers through your hair, and voilà! Smooth, frizz-free locks that are ready to take on the day. How, you ask? Well, that's where Brazilian Blowout and traditional Keratin treatments come into play. These bad boys are like magic potions for your hair, but which one reigns supreme? Let's break it down, shall we?
Brazilian Blowout (MVP)
First up, we've got Brazilian Blowout, the undisputed champ of hair smoothing. It originated in sunny Brazil, hence the name, but it's made its way into the hearts (and hair) of folks across the United States. So, what's the deal? It's like a keratin treatment's cool cousin, with a few twists.
This stuff is like a dream come true for anyone tired of battling frizz and unruly strands. What sets it apart? Well, for starters, there is no down time! You can wash, swim or style your hair anyway you want right after the treatment. Say hello to silky, shiny hair right after your salon sesh.
BEST PART??? It's customizable! The treatment can be customized to your hair and your needs. It can smooth frizz, while KEEPING YOUR CURLS. This is NOT a straightening treatment. While it can be done to REDUCE curl pattern, if desired, it will not take super curly hair and leave it straight.
In a Brazilian blowout, a serum is applied to the hair and then sealed in with heat. This creates a protective layer around each strand of hair, which helps to keep it smooth and straight.
A Brazilian blowout works by infusing your hair with keratin, a protein that naturally exists in your hair. The keratin bonds with your hair, creating a protective layer around each strand. This helps to smooth your hair and protect it from damage.
It's like giving your hair a cozy little blanket that protects each strand, keeping it as smooth as a hot knife through butter. The best part? Your hair feels like it just had a spa day, all soft, silky, and frizz-free. Say goodbye to those pesky flyaways because this treatment makes your hair easier to handle than a Sunday morning.
With proper care, I usually expect the effects of this treatment to last about 3 months.
As of January 2025 the Original Brazilian Blowout Solution will no longer be sold in Washington State (where I am) and the origional treatment will no longer be allowed to be used after January 2026. Brazilian Blowout has answered this problem with a new version of the product that, so far, is not getting rave reviews and doesn't seem to compare to the original version. I'm hoping they'll figure out the issues and come up with something to replace the original that is just as good or even better before 2026!
Other Keratin Treatments
Now, let's talk about traditional Keratin treatments. These babies have been around the block and have their fair share of loyal fans. They promise long-lasting results, making your hair sleek and gorgeous for months on end.
The process is a bit more lengthy than the 60-90 min involved in a Brazilian Blowout, because the solution has to sit on the hair for about 30 minutes before being heat set into the hair.
Then there is the fact that you'll have some down time, and what you do to your hair after you leave the salon and really jack up your treatment!
*Don’t wash your hair for 72 hours!
*Don’t clip up or pony your hair, because it can leave a permanent “Kink”
*Don’t even put your hair behind your ears!!!
*Don’t put your glasses on top of your head
*Don’t SWEAT!!!
Sure, they get the job done, but at what cost? Hours in the salon chair and that funky smell lingering around for days? No, thank you!
Safety Concerns (Link to OSHA Info)
For many Smoothing Treatments on the market, OSHA is raising some eyebrows about formaldehyde levels. EVEN THOSE TREATMENTS CLAIMING TO BE FORMALDEHYDE FREE, CAN BE A PROBLEM.
I always suggest having your smoothing treatment performed in a room with adequate ventilation and even suggest wearing a mask to avoid breathing in any fumes.
The funky fumes can be kept at a minimum by performing the service properly, not overusing the product and paying attention to heat so that burn off is kept to a minimum.
Final Thoughts
I still believe the Original Brazlilian Blowout is the best smoothing treatment on the market. The new version is complicated to apply and has varying results, not to mention it's a chemical treatment that forever alters the hair apposed to just coating the hair.
Stay Beautiful!
